How To Potty Train A Dachshund The Easy Way

Hi Dachshund lovers are you having trouble potty training your Dachshund? Whenever I meet a new Dachshund puppy owner, potty training them is always mentioned.

Yes, Dachshund puppies are often hard to fully potty train and it is sad that some people give up on them. Even older Dachshunds can suddenly start peeing in your house!

We have purchased a lot of books that were supposidly about potty training Dachshunds but after awhile it became clear that they were really just dog training books. There was nothing in them that was specific to Dachshunds except maybe the word 'Dachshund".

So, I have been hearing about an ebook written by an associate of mine Karen Larson. She has been fostering Dachshunds in her home for many years and all left fully potty trained.

How To Potty Train A Dachshund is written just for Dachshund owners. It includes many tips that only apply to Dachshunds.

Do Dachshunds Swim Or Sink

Now summer is well and truly here hundreds of Dachshunds are cooling off in their owners swimming pools, the sea or local pond. People often wonder if their short legged Dachshunds can swim. The quick answer is yes dachshunds can swim however they can also sink.

Kyjen Pet Saver Life Jacket SmallIn fact many dachshunds love to dive into water and swim but owners need to make sure they are keeping a very close eye on their swimming dachshund because unlike us they can not reach the bottom of most pools. This means that when they get exhausted from swimming they need to be able to either float (by wearing a life jacket/vest) or immediately get out of the pool.

I have a friend who's dachshund loved to swim but unfortunately her little baby jumped in the pool when they were not outside. She sadly could not get back out of the pool because of the sides being too steep and drowned. My friend now puts life jackets on her other dachshunds whenever they are anywhere near the pool. Her pool is also now fenced. This was a very sad time for her and really opened my eyes to the problems of allowing a dachshund to swim.

Paws Aboard Designer Life Jacket - SLife jackets for dogs are very cheap and Dachshund Luke loves his. He is not a big swimmer and gets worn out very quickly but when he is wearing his life jacket he just takes a break and floats around the pool :-)

If you have a dachshund or small dog that loves water you may want to consider purchasing a Paws Aboard Designer Life Jacket - S for them.

Best Dachshund Bed Is The PetMate Burrow Bed

Best Dachshund Bed Is The PetMate Burrow Bed

When chosing a bed for your Dachshund there is one important thing to remember - Dachshunds love to snuggle under blankets.

Many Dachshunds are lucky enough to sleep in their owners beds with them, and of course they will be under the covers.

Because of this Dachshund love to snuggle and sleep under covers, most 'normal' dogs beds are not ideal. Dachshunds do not really enjoy just perched on a cushion - they want to burrow under something.

Of course you could add a blanket for your Dachshund to burrow under although be prepared for your dog to drag it around the house.

For a long time our Dachshund used a soft cat bed because it had a small opening and with the addition of a warm blanket he felt nice and secure in his burrow.

We have since got him a  PetMate Burrow Bed and he loves it. This bed is the perfect Dachshund bed.
Not only is it nice and soft but comes with an attached blanket. Our Dachshund loves to burrow into his bed and he is not dragging the blanket all around the room.

The cover is removable and you can throw it in the washing machine.

Dachshund Crates - Get The Right One!

Dachshund Crates - Get the right one!

Looking for the right crate for your Dachshund can be very confusing. They may be small but their long bodies mean the tiny cute crates are not suitable for them. Many Dachshund lovers have purchased the smallest crates available in the local pet store only to find that their little one is too long to fit comfortably inside.

If you are looking for a crate to use at home while you are out or for training it is imperative that your Dachshund feels not only comfortable but secure inside. Crates are an excellent choice for Dachshunds since they often feel lonely when you leave them and may even howl for hours. These little pack dogs become so dedicated to their owners that they feel lost and stressed if left to wander room to room looking for you.

However, they soon learn that when they are in their cozy crate it is time for a nice nap until you return and let they out again. It is amazing how a Dachshund that normally howls when you leave suddenly is quiet when snug in his crate. They understand that they are being left, feel secure and are not searching the house for you.

Now on the other hand if you plan on taking your Dachshund on vacation with you and it involves putting them in cargo then it is very important that you have measured your Dachshund correctly. The Airlines have stringent rules about the size of a crate compared to the size of your Dachshund. I recommend that you measure, then measure again because the airline will not allow your Dachshund to get on the flight if the crate is not the correct size.

My Dachshund has travelled with us to many countries, his last flight was from Florida to Spain. We purchased his crate many months before our flight to allow him time to get used to it and feel at home, safe and secure inside.

I have put together a few articles to insure your Dachshund not only has the correct crate but also tips on how to guarantee they get on the flight! The last thing you need is for your Dachshund to not make the flight and get left in the cargo area!

Can A Dachshund Be Trained?

Can a Dachshund be trained? Absolutely!

If you own a Dachshund Puppy or an older dog at some point, you really owe it to yourself to put a little effort into training him.

Scooping him up into your arms when he does something wrong is not training – I know it is so easy to do and they love to be picked up, but that will just make your Dachshund think that when he does that action he gets picked up – Yes he got what he wanted.

Please Click Here to watch a free training video that shows you how easy it is to do.

How To Train A Dachshund Puppy

Your little Dachshund puppy may seem easy to train - you just pick him up when he does something wrong. Well sorry folks but that is not training him. In fact it is only teaching him that whatever he is doing must be good because he gets to sit in your arms or on your lap - every Dachshunds dream!

Since Dachshunds are very hard headed and stubourn it is worth getting advise on how to train them. Either enroll in a training class, read books - either purchased or instantly downloaded to your computer or watch videos.
